Nashville Star - Episode 8 - Recap

Coffey is eliminated. - VIDEO

Tonight is the last week to vote. There are 4 contestants left. One will be eliminated tonight. The winner will be revealed in next week’s finale…

The remaining contestants make hometown visits.

More Recap and VIDEOS after the JUMP…

Shawn Mayer - “I’m Here for the Party” by Gretchen Wilson - All her peeps in May City, Iowa sure are excited that Shawn is still in the race! The local mall is rockin! She rides a motorcycle to her hometown concert. After she performs “I’m Here for the Party” John says she made a Gretchen Wilson song sound like a Shawn Mayer song. Jewel got a new haircut! Jeff says he wishes she’d hit the high note, but then tells the audience she’s got “wisdom teeth issues”. What a trouper! - VIDEO

Gabe Garcia - “It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere” by Alan Jackson - Gabe says coming home to Texas is the best feeling in the world. He rides in a limo and gets a parade. He meets the Mayor. He gets the key to his city and dedicates it to his dad. He plays to 10,000 people in his hometown. Gabe seems real relaxed, more relaxed than I’ve seen him all season. He’s the most truly authentic country singer here, and I hope he wins. Jeff says he was a little pitchy at the beginning and end. John says he’s the real deal and thinks he can bridge the gap between country music and the Hispanic community. Jewel identifies with his small-town roots. - VIDEO

Coffey - “Sweet Home Alabama” Coffey comes back to Los Angeles to play a concert at his church. Coffey gets his own star in Hollywood. NBC was willing to pay for that! “Big stars” (Billy Ray calls his concert a “star studded event” heh) Patricia Heaton and Sinbad show up to his concert. Oh, LOLZ! The irony of a black man singing “Sweet Home Alabama”! Even more hilarious than when Ruben did it Season 2. Coffey’s goat vibrato is in full force, y’all. Jeff thinks he was “pretty good” and that he’s a great showman. John thinks he’s a star, but not a Nashville star. Jewel thinks there’s a difference between singing live and singing for a record and she wants to see him “make that transition.” - VIDEO

Melissa Lawson - “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar - She can’t wait to see her husband and 5 kids. She believes she can be a country star and a mom. She’s nervous to go back to her high school in Arlington, Texas, where people picked on her. Of course, being on TV changes everything and people are there to see her and cheer her on. She performs the 80’s POP hit “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.” If she wants to win Nashville Star, she ought to sing a country song, don’t you think? The tune gives her the opportunity to belt away, which is what she does best. Jewel thinks she did a great job. Jeff likes it, but is a little tired of hearing the big notes all the time, and thinks the other contestants are catching up with her. John asks her why she wants to be the next Nashville Star. She gives him a Miss America type answer, “It will change the lives of my children, blah blah blah…” - VIDEO

The three contestants moving on get to sing a second song…

Shawn Mayer - “The Dance” by Garth Brooks - Shawn’s performances have been uneven over the weeks but she’s got potential as a singer. And, she comes across as a truly country singer. This performance is a bit pitchy, but it’s got the proper emotion. I’m buying it. John says it’s a huge deal that she made the Top 3 on Nashville Star. “Good job,” he says. Jeff says she showed herself to be a real pro tonight. - VIDEO

Melissa Lawson - “Jesus Take the Wheel” by Carrie Underwood - A good choice of song, but she’s a bit pitchy on the high notes. She’s no Carrie Underwood, I’ll tell you that. Jewel keeps harping on how hard the business is, like with every contestant. Jeff says the verses were a little low for her, but she was great on the high notes. John says “Those kinds of performances connect with the country audience, you have a chance to be the next Nashville Star.” - VIDEO

Coffey and Gabe are left…

Coffey is eliminated. Whew. It would have been criminal if Gabe had been eliminated instead.

Coffey says if you don’t see him singing live, he’ll be leading worship in a church…somewhere. Oh goody, we’re going to get to see Coffey again on the Nashville Star concert tour. Who’s going to see that? - VIDEO

Gabe Garcia - “Living in Fast-Forward” by Kenny Chesney - Go go Gabe! I hope he wins. Jeff reminds America that “we have some great talent in this room,” and that anyone who doesn’t think so, can “kiss his country ass.” He tells Gabe that his voice is “radio all day long.” John thinks he’s going to be the Hispanic Savior of Country Music, and that there’s a record deal in Gabe’s future. Jewel thinks he’s doing a great job, stepping it up with the audience. - VIDEO

Time to vote peeps! As if.

I’m with you, Frogpond. Coffey, to me, has overstayed his welcome. Gabe better make it.

Melissa’s big notes and buggy eyes are getting on my nerves

Melissa sings like Carrie Underwood, with those high notes. I’m happy with the top 3.

  9. 9 Lisa Jul 28th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

I can’t seem to like Melissa, not even a little bit. She can sing yes, but she is pitchy fairly often. MJ you got it, she is NO Carrie. Not even close, plus her *tude*, ugh.

My money is on Gabe and has been from the start. Gabe FTW!!!

  10. 10 longsong Jul 28th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

    WOW, MJ - you’re FAST!

I haven’t been keeping up with this show, but saw some videos here on this site in the beginning and LOVED Gabe then. I stumbled across the show again tonight and still do!

I was mystified at some of the things Jewel said, most notably when she said that Gabe needed to connect more with the audience. !?! I thought he connected better than ALL of them! Put together! There’s something raw and sincere about him. Gabe for the WIN!!

    What’s his number again…..?

Gabe and Shawn seem more authentic to me, so I hope one of them wins. Mostly Gabe, but I wouldn’t cry over a Shawn win.

Coffey singing “Sweet Home Alabama” didn’t bother me because of any irony regarding his race. I understand that there’s a lot of controversy surrounding the lyrics and what the intent was, and the songwriters claim it wasn’t pro-George Wallace. I really don’t know. I grew up associating it with sporting events b/c it was played more than freaking “We Will Rock You” in my neck of the woods.

That said, it DID annoy me because as always, he sucked large at singing it. So happy he is gone.

I wonder what the new single is.

    I love Gabe’s demeanor….

#2….Shawn ===good singer and seems nice.

#3…Melissa==Good voice but doesn’t strike me as Real country(country Ain’t what it used to be)…..Congrats on weight loss.

Coffey==Tiger Woods in a Cowboy Hat. Coffey is cute and sweet and fun.

I’m hoping for a Shawn Mayer upset.
    Gabe would be ok too.
Melissa’s pointy chin bugs me - why I am I so superficial? She is pitchy to me - when she shouts, she goes off pitch. Parts of Jesus Take the Wheel were spot on and others - I liked Lakisha Jones’ version better. Course, she’s no Carrie is right!

John Rich is coming to this area with McCain this weekend.

I really liked Shawn tonight. She definitely gets the award for most improved, because I barely remembered her after the first week, and she’s slowly become one of my favorites. I’m voting for her tonight. I’d love for her to win, but I wouldn’t be upset if Gabe did, either. I agree with pj - they both are authentically country.

Melissa is NOT authentic, IMO. No Carrie Underwood is right. She was pitchy and screechy and shouty on the high notes of JTTW. Oh and John Rich, while people may respond to the emotional content of songs like that, it always helps if the person sings them well. Melissa didn’t so much, imo.

I cringed when Shawn launched into “Here for the Party.” Don’t get me wrong, I loved her performance, but I was like “OMG John’s gonna hate this”, so needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised that he gave her props. I thought she was GREAT. And I thought she also did a great job with “The Dance.” I love that song.

I just realized Coffey was on AI2 - never made it past Hollywood. You probably all have talked about this, but I really liked him on Idol and was surprised he didn’t m make if further. Too bad he was eliminated, but good on him he’s gotten some more exposure.

Time to vote peeps! As if.

Hahaha. I’m picturing mj saying “as if.”

I agree with Gabe being the best. BUt unfortunately, i dont see him making it in the country industry.

    Coffee’s departure was long overdue.

These poor people. They do have talent and some of them are great singers. The problem is not with them, but the lackluster host, Billy Ray Cyrus and that other blonde woman who seems to be announing a beauty pageant.

The whole feel of the show was lackluster. The judges were okay, but the hosts were really dead. Billy Ray read the teleprompter the whole time and had absolutely no emotion or connection with the contestants.

No one seemed to be connecting. On Idol, they become friends. Ryan and the judges make jokes back and forth. You kind of sense that they’re all together on this, but on this show, it’s like waiting in line at the DMV to take a picture. They come out, sing a song, and get back in line. They don’t show the audience. They don’t ask questions. There is just nothing to cushion the show and make you want to vote.

Gabe is the best singer although I don’t know if he has the personality to headline. Melissa sings well, but I agree, her bulging eyes are distracting. Coffey was okay, but he sang like a worship leader. He kept trying to get the audience to sing along, and well, he was supposed to be entertaining us, not getting us to participate in a sing-a-long. Shawn seems authentic. She isn’t the best singer, but if she or Gabe win, it would just make sense.

If I had not watched the first show this season, or had TiVo I would not have continued to watch. Most nights I was like, “why am I watching this?”

I feel bad for the contestants because they are talented, but they just weren’t showcased with this bunch of producers and editing team.

Sadly, I have been keeping up with this show which I guess just proves I have a reality tv “problem”. I hope Gabe or Shawn wins. Melissa has that bland, vanilla, Faith Hill country sound I hate. Actually I don’t even think she’s as country as Faith Hill. And why no mention of her crazy bug eyes and pageantyness when the judges made it such an issue for that other Reba look-alike contestant whose name I’ve already forgotten? I feel like they’re giving her a free pass cuz she lost 40 pounds and she’s got a bunch of kids.

I am relieved that the final 3 contestants in this season with less than could be hoped for talent, are 3 of those that I considered talented. Gabe has been my fave since week 1, and actually as soon as the contestants were announced and I could check out myspace and you tube looking for a chance for sneak peeks (in at least some of the past seasons the official NS website offered the sneak peeks). I liked Melissa the first week also and still think she sings well, but doesn’t sing country enough for my choice this season. I wasn’t so impressed with many of the others, but Coffey would have been my choice to have been sent home by the judges and failing that, to have been voted off first. Shawn came on strong the last few weeks, but still not even close to Gabe in my opinion. Go, Gabe.

After a few performances I realized that Gabe was the only one singing country every time he sang. Even Gabe’s pop songs sounded country, which I think was the point of the pop goes country theme. So since week two, all my votes have gone to Gabe. He sings on pitch more than most and as much as any of the contestants and he sings country. I also prefer Gabe’s quiet, natural charm to the cheese offered by the “better performers”. He’s the real deal and doesn’t need the gyrations, facial contortions, or any other cheese to convice anyone he is a country singer.

In my opinion, Gabe is the only contestant that deserves the Nashville Star title. He has been the most consistantly good country singer on the show. Gabe is what I thought the show was supposed to be about discovering.

I guess I’m in the minority because I actually like Melissa. I think that either she or Gabe would be a good winner. I’m not a Shawn fan at all although she was better the other night (we just watched last night). I haven’t watched the show since season 1. Is the winner based on voting from Monday? That’s a different way to do it if so.
